What Is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a condition characterized by loss of pigment from areas of the skin.
It is generally considered an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system targets melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment.
Common Features
- Depigmented white patches
- Patches that may gradually enlarge
- Symmetrical or localized involvement
- Loss of pigment in hair in some cases
Commonly Affected Areas
- Face
- Hands
- Feet
- Around the eyes and mouth
- Fingers
- Elbows and knees
- Genital areas
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually clinical. A Wood's lamp examination may help identify areas of pigment loss.
Management
Treatment options may include topical corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, phototherapy, and other dermatological treatments. Selected stable cases may be considered for surgical procedures.
Individualized Homoeopathic Care
A detailed consultation may explore the onset and progression of patches, distribution, associated skin symptoms, previous treatment, family history, and overall health.
Homoeopathy should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for vitiligo.
