What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a symptom caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots.
It usually affects one side of the body.
Common Symptoms
- Pain from lower back or buttock into the leg
- Sharp or burning pain
- Tingling
- Numbness
- Leg weakness
- Pain aggravated by certain movements
- Difficulty sitting or walking
Common Causes
- Herniated disc
- Bone spurs

- Other conditions causing nerve-root compression
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is often based on history and physical examination. MRI or other imaging may be recommended when symptoms are severe, persistent, or associated with neurological deficits.
Management
Management may include maintaining appropriate activity, physiotherapy, pain-relieving medicines, and treatment of the underlying cause. Some cases require injections or surgery.
Individualized Homoeopathic Care
Detailed assessment may include the exact pathway of pain, sensation, side affected, movement, position, aggravating and relieving factors, numbness, tingling, weakness, sleep, and previous injury.
Important
Progressive leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or anal area requires urgent medical evaluation.
